Please note that there is a three-month period remaining to import cars up to the year 2012. After April 31, it will no longer be possible to import cars from the years 2004 to 2012.
The New Zealand Government is set to adopt the Euro 5 Emission Standard from April 2024 as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce vehicle emissions.
As a result, cars manufactured up to the year 2012, which do not meet the Euro 5 standard, will soon become ineligible for import. This could lead to an increase in the rarity and value of certain car models on the local New Zealand market, as the availability of compliant vehicles becomes more restricted.
If you're considering a pre-2012 car model, it's advisable to proceed with the importation now while the opportunity still exists. The vehicle must undergo a border check in Japan before April 31st for importation. Therefore, the cutoff date for winning a car from Auction and arranging its shipment would ideally be in the first week of April. This gives us a three-month window to locate and purchase a car manufactured before 2012. You can register, place your bids, and secure the car you desire.

General Rules to import a car INto
New Zealand
- Emission Code: Cars must have a triple emission code. We check for it after you've placed a practice bid online.
- ESC - Electronic Stability Control: All cars must be equipped with this feature. ESC is similar to traction control. We check if a car has it before we buy.
- Years which can be imported: 2004+ for petrol. 2008+ for diesel.
- 20 years and older: Any car which is 20 years and former can be imported. No rules apply - easy to import. This means we are able to import nearly any car manufactured before 2004.
We are knowledgeable about the cars that can be imported and offer all the necessary information for you to make an informed decision. If we're ever in doubt, we often cancel your bids ourselves. You can trust in our expertise.

PAYMENT Process
- $1000 Deposit: Make a $1000 deposit on our ANZ account, to make your test bids into live bids.
- Credit card payment: Credit card payment is possible up to $9000 using cards issued by NZ banks only. 2.9% surcharge will apply.
- Car finance/loan: Regular car finance (car loans) does not work when importing, make sure you have funds ready before placing bids.
- Car payment: We will email you invoice 1-3 days after we won the auction.

About Japan and Japanese Cars
Many ask us: "Why cars coming from Japan with such low mileage?"
The answer is, in Japan, and most cities have populations from 3 to 15 million people. Only 30% of the land is suitable for a living - the rest are mountains. Traffic is congested, so most people drive their car only after work or on the weekend, and they park next to the train station and commute to work. Additionally, because traffic is so dense, drivers generally don't drive fast nor long distances and have to stop for traffic lights every few hundred meters. All motorways are toll charged, so car travel is not cheap. To travel from Niigata to Tokyo by highway can cost up to 300 NZD, to cover 400 km.
All of these factors contribute to Japanese drivers' driving less. Hence, not only the mileage is low, but cars are not used much and are still in great condition, which is good for us.
Another question is: "Why there are so many cars coming from Japan?"
The answer is simple. Japan is a small country by size but has a population of 127 million people. It's a big market for Japanese domestic car manufacturers like Toyota or Honda and many European brands. These car giants market heavily to make people change for a newer car. As a result, many barely used vehicles are available for sale every year.
People also ask us: "Do car owners in Japan get their cars regularly serviced?"
Yes. When sold new, each car is serviced after 3 months and again after 1 year, for FREE, by the dealers such as Toyota and Honda. Japanese drivers purchase mechanical warranties and insurance and keeping their vehicles well maintained as a part of the deal. Dealer urge buyers to regularly service their cars – advice which Japanese drivers follow thoroughly. Also, the Japanese car owners understand that their car will have a better trade-in value when properly serviced. Usually, they trade-in their car within 5 years and maintain a good service history, to get a higher trade-in price. The dealer also services their cars before re-sale at the auctions.

You do not need to be experienced in Japanese Auctions to apply for our Importing Service. We have a gradual system, which automatically guides you through.
So that we can attend to realistic inquiries better, please provide as much information as possible about your desired car during application.
Our importing service is very popular, and we are getting a lot of inquiries. We simply need to know ample information to gauge importability of your desired car at our first point of contact. This helps us to serve realistic inquiries better.
Please Note: We value dedicated customers willing to learn and put in the time necessary to import a car from Japan. Your first contact with Japanese Auctions through our website should take 30 minutes to 1-hour minimum. It includes registering, watching the training video and browsing auctions and placing practice bids. Then coming back to check our replies on your Practice Bids. We might not be able to answer on all inquiries, but we always reply to your Practice Bid - we reply both by email and in the Electronic Office where your every practice bid is saved.
It's a car you want to import and save thousands. So it's in your interest to invest your time and attention into auctions and place practice bids.
Most of our customers' self-complete Stage 1, and then avail our importing specialist for the realistic bids. We will update you with the auction list translation and our advice, have a call or email conversation to get all the details about your desired import, advice you on the price and savings and monitor auctions together with you.

Our website is designed to automatically guide you to the Practice Bidding, and then we engage with auction lists translations and our advice and process realistic bids.
By following through the website steps, you can check the prices in Japan, see what is available, and ask questions when you place practice bids. Practice bids are for trying it out. All bids are staying practice until you make a deposit and confirm your bid.
